Sumidagawa no Hanabi

Last Saturday, July 28, 2007, I went to Asakusa to see the fireworks display. Every year, on the last Saturday of July along Sumida River, one can see beautiful flowers in the sky. The Sumida River Fireworks Festival is actually a revival of an Edo spectacle first held in 1733 to comfort the souls of the dead and to drive away the pestilence after the whole of Japan had suffered a great famine, especially in Edo (present day Tokyo) where so many people were dying of cholera that bodies were abandoned on the streets.

Since I will be coming from Honjo, I went there a bit earlier (luckily we still have the shuttle bus service available that day, that means I saved up some few yens for the free ride). I have been planning for this for quite some time and already got some helpful tips from some friends like getting there as early as possible to secure a very good spot to watch.

I intended to get there a bit early as I also planned to go around Sensoji (Asakusa Kannon Temple) and nearby establishments. Since I am geared up to take some shots of the fireworks, I didn't missed the chance of getting some pictures in Asakusa as well.
